Questions Before an Automotive Locksmith Is Dispatched

A consumer checklist

10 questions to ask before an automotive locksmith is dispatched

A few specific questions can prevent wasted time, unclear fees and a provider arriving without the right capability.

  1. Can you support my exact year, make and model?
  2. Can you handle the job if every key is lost?
  3. Can the complete job be done at the vehicle?
  4. Does the estimate include the key or fob itself?
  5. Does it include blade cutting and electronic programming?
  6. What is the dispatch or service-call charge?
  7. What is the estimated total if the job is completed?
  8. What charge applies if your equipment cannot complete it?
  9. Is the replacement new, refurbished, aftermarket or OEM?
  10. What identification and ownership proof will you require?
Get the answer in writing when practical. A text message or written estimate can make the scope and fees easier to understand. Final conditions may still change after inspection, but the reason should be explained.

Red flags

  • Refusal to discuss any dispatch charge
  • A universal compatibility promise without asking the vehicle year and model
  • An extremely low headline price with no explanation of what it includes
  • Pressure to proceed before the provider identifies the business
  • Requests to send sensitive ownership documents through an insecure channel
