A consumer checklist
10 questions to ask before an automotive locksmith is dispatched
A few specific questions can prevent wasted time, unclear fees and a provider arriving without the right capability.
- Can you support my exact year, make and model?
- Can you handle the job if every key is lost?
- Can the complete job be done at the vehicle?
- Does the estimate include the key or fob itself?
- Does it include blade cutting and electronic programming?
- What is the dispatch or service-call charge?
- What is the estimated total if the job is completed?
- What charge applies if your equipment cannot complete it?
- Is the replacement new, refurbished, aftermarket or OEM?
- What identification and ownership proof will you require?
Get the answer in writing when practical. A text message or written estimate can make the scope and fees easier to understand. Final conditions may still change after inspection, but the reason should be explained.
Red flags
- Refusal to discuss any dispatch charge
- A universal compatibility promise without asking the vehicle year and model
- An extremely low headline price with no explanation of what it includes
- Pressure to proceed before the provider identifies the business
- Requests to send sensitive ownership documents through an insecure channel
